1. What is the location of the proposed commercial event venue?
The proposed event venue would be on a 23 acre parcel located in a high fire severity zone residential neighborhood on Triunfo Canyon Road near Lobo Canyon Road. Access to the property is on Triunfo Canyon Road, which is a narrow, unlit, single ingress/egress road off of Kanan. Traffic and fire ramifications for Triunfo and Lobo Canyon would be overwhelming and pose a serious risk to residents and event venue guests in the event of an emergency evacuation. This small community is primarily comprised of residential homes and a handful of equestrian facilities. Triunfo Canyon Road is the only means of ingress/egress for LoboCanyon Road. Click here to see the exact location on google maps. This land use is inappropriate. No event venues should be allowed on Triunfo or Lobo Canyon Road.
2. Do we need to hire representation?
Yes. Protect Our Canyons has already retained a land use attorney as well as a lobbyist. Additionally, we will likely need to hire a number of other consultants (traffic, land use, fire safety, environmental, etc) — all to help us protect the canyon, the wildlife, and the quality of life and safety of residents. This is why we urge you to contribute.
3. Are my contributions tax-deductible?
Protect Our Canyons has filed an application for a 501(c)(3) non-profit designation. As soon as we receive our 501 (c)(3) status (likely within 3-6 months), all contributors will be given a tax I.D. number so their donations will be tax deductible (just like any other charitable contribution).
4. How much will this cost?
The short answer is "a lot of money." Battles to protect the zoning and commercialization of a residential community like ours often cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. We must raise additional funds to be able to continue the fight. The developer is spending obscene amounts of money on lobbyists, lawyers and others to try to push this project forward. It is unfortunate that we have to spend money to defend ourselves against this threat, but if we don’t we will not be able to win this battle, our canyons will be destroyed, the wildlife and environment will be harmed, and the Santa Monica Mountains will be forever changed.
5. How can I can I get a yard sign?
Just write to us at action@protectourcanyons.org and we will make arrangements to get you one.
6. What can I do?
We need to ensure the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) addresses all environmental impacts of this project. Here's what you can do:
7. How else can I volunteer?
We need members of the community to spread the word, help get the petition signed, show up for meetings, and stay engaged with the process. Specifically, we need volunteers to help organize their immediate neighbors, promote awareness, and help fundraise. Please let us know if you are able to do any of these things or if you have specific skills you would bring to this effort.
